The buffering capacity of several types of silica gels have been determined.2627 The results for a regular and an intermediate density silica gel, both of which are useful for mineralogical preservation applications, are given in Figure 3.15.

Once the container, specimen, and silica gel have been selected and prepared, but before assembly, the silica gel should be tested to determine its buffering capacity.
From the results of this test a buffering capacity in terms of weight percentage of the conditioned silica can be calculated.
